Full moon trip to Rymättylä

July in Europe has been exceptionally hot but the heat has skipped Finland totally – it has been rainy and rather chilly here. At the end of July we decided to chase the rain from our friend’s cottage in Rymättylä and succeeded in that: The rain ended on our way after the Lohja ridge and started again when we came back in the same region two days later.

We had ordered the tickets to Röölä Meriteatteri. As in the last year, the story was about the people around the herring fishing between the years 1945-1974. The reason it ended was the Island decision to broaden their fishing area, which reduced the possibilities for Finns to fish there. Röölä, the tiny village in Rymättylä, was the head place for the Finnish herring fleet.

We didn’t manage to make the weather warmer though it stopped raining. So we preferred staying near the barbecue fire to stay warm.

Instead of herrings we ate a lot of barbecued salmon.

There was a flaming sunset ....

…    and full moon after that.

The next day was a bit warmer so we decided to have a little exploration to the islands of Rymättylä. This time we used a car and a ferry for about ten cars to get to the outmost island. There we entered the harbor from where we could have crossed the sea area called Airisto to get to Nauvo.

                                                The ferry harbour

The islands are mostly covered by forests and here and there are some potato, wheat and barley fields. Nowadays Rymättylä is a very important potato producer. The highest points and the coastal line are mostly rocky.

We also climbed to the hill called Karhuvuori (Bear Mountain).

Our “mountains” are quite honest compared with other countries but the view to the archipelago was really pleasant. There were a little observation tower, originally built for the aerial surveillance.

When we arrived to the cottage we heard the message that Finnish Nazis had had a demonstration in Jyväskylä town and after that they had beaten a left wing activist whom they happened to spot along their marching route. A week before that a member of parliament Olli Immonen (True Finns) had written a Facebook update that seemed oddly like an invitation to “the battle against the multiculturism”.
The text was in English and resembled oddly the expressions of Norwegian mass murderer Breivik. The text waked attention enormously and there were about twenty thousand people in different parts of Finland demonstrating against his statements.  Later he denied he had meant any concrete battle and he claimed he do not know any Nazis – even though there are a plenty of evidence that he has taken part to some rituals with them and they share some organizations where his in leading position. Anyway some idiots took his message literally and acted.

The incident made us talk quite serious issues that night. Finland is still quite monocultural with rather small number of refugees and immigrants. If we do the things right we could manage to keep Finland warm and accepting and integrate the different ethnical groups in friendly and appreciating manner. And of course we must avoid the clashes between LGBTI-people and immigrants – the thing that Nazis try to provoke.

When we were leaving Rymättylä we still bought potatoes and some other organic vegetables in quite strange shop: Potatoes, garlic tomatoes, kale, a steelyard, a calculator, a notebook and a churn. No people. So we took what we wanted, weighed it, calculated the sum and put the money to the churn!! It seems it is the habit there, because we did it in same way in another place last summer. When we left the shop we dreamed of the world where everyone could trust to each other that way.

Evacuated to the East

In the middle of July we had our kitchen reconstructed so we went to our cottage in the eastern Finland. We made some trips from there, including a visit to Karelian Pasty festival (“Piiroofestivaalit) in Ilomantsi, the most eastern parish in Finland. The Karelian pasty is a small pie made of rye pastry and with filling made of rice, barley or potato. It is delicious and very popular and I think the most original version of it is made in regions round Ilomantsi with the strongest Karelian orthodox cultural influences. We had an opportunity to make our own pastys and naturally to eat them, as well. There are some other traditional pasty variants such as sultsina (a kind of tortilla mad of rye pastry), tsupukka and vatruska (containing potato cover around the rice filling). We tasted also the new innovations like tsupukka with wild boar filling and sultsina with chanterelle filling.  We ate some pastys also at our cottage so it might have been the reason I gained two extra kilos…

Making the pastry                                               Ready for the owen!!

So delicious....!!                Greeting the calf of the original Eastern Finnish cow "kyyttö"

The weather was not very warm or sunny so I took sun bath in my bikini only once. When we swam while sauna-bathing we naturally wore no clothes.

We also visited Savonlinna opera festival and saw Boris Godunov, Matti Salminen as Boris. Salminen is already 70 years old but his voice is still full of power and expression. Compared to average Boris he avoided exaggerating expression, partly to reserve his powers, of course. The performance took place in Olavinlinna castle

From Savonlinna we traveled to Kuopio.  We choose our route through lakes and islands of Northern Saimaa region, the home of Saimaa lake ringed seals. The islands with small hills are filled with forests and very often the road joins the rocky coast line. In some places there were little ferries called “lossi” instead of bridges.

In Kuopio we had a boat trip on the Kallavesi lake. I have lived in Kuopio but my spouse had never done it there. We saw a new suburb built in the archipelago. I remember the same region when it was a total unbuilt wilderness.

In Kuopio we had a message that our kitchen reconstruction was ready, so it was time to go back home. On our way we still met my friend Tiina in Joroinen and had a nice chat with her.

Helsinki Pride 2015

This year I could take part only to part of the Pride week because my Spouse had her “official” birthday celebration at the Parade day. However I had an opportunity to help the arrangements of the panel about “the ideal transgender legislation”. on Tuesday. The issue was there have been so much progress in some countries except Finland. On the other hand it seemed obvious that deleting the unnecessary division by gender in legislation would be the best thing to promote the rights of the transgender people.

After it I still went to Seta office where the DreamWearClub evening took place.

On Wednesday I accompanied the song happening for the transgender people at Seta office. After it I went to Kaisaniemi restaurant for Pride Logdans where I danced a bit and chatted much more. Despite the fact that the weather was rather chilly the air in the dance hall was too hot and heavy. That didn’t seem to disturb the good mood of the dancers.

Friday was the next and the last day I took part. We have made a agreement to meet with Hannamaria at the Seta activist picnic at the Kaisaniemi Park. After visiting another (trans-) picnic without any own packed lunch we went for a small supper at the restaurant in the city near the cinema we were to go next. There was the premiere of the document film of three transgender people and their experience of their gender identity.

After the film we still went to “The Ladies Party” at the Kaivohuone restaurant. It is a huge event with lots of women and of course with lots of my friends. The only disadvantage was the heavy bumping disco music.

Despite I went near the stage to be swallowed by the rhythm nothing just happened. So I just walked around and chatted with people. Because I was not forced to wake up early for the Parade I could it till the midnight.

Visiting two Sofias, Crete June 2015

June 2015 was really chilly in Finland, so it was a good choice to head for Agios Nicolaos in Crete for a week. The main purpose was to celebrate my spouse’s 60th birthday but the timing matched also in climatic point of view.

We had a quite small hotel run by lady named Sofia. She also had an employee named Sofia who appeared to have Greek father and mother from Rovaniemi and therefore she spoke Finnish fluently with Northern accent.

We liked to see much more than just beaches so we made some organized bus trips. We visited the Spinalonga Island, the main place for the TV series “To Nisi”, based on the best-selling English novel The Island by Victoria Hislop. It tells about the leper patients living on the isolated island and how they decided to start living instead of just being dying patients. The buildings on the island are almost ruined so the film was made in the Upper Village of Elounda – which we also visited.

The next day we travelled to Lassithi Plateau in the center of the island. It is 800 meters above the sea level and our bus had to climb even higher to reach the plateau between the mountains. It is s so high even olive trees seen everywhere else in Crete cannot grow there. So the main articles are potatoes, apples and wine. Our main target there was the huge stalagmite cave which is said to be the hiding place of baby Zeus. At least the bees and goats that are said to feed Zeus were there.

                                          The Lassithi Plateau

Our last organized trip was to Herakleion and Knossos, the best places to learn about the Minoan culture.  There was a certain division: The actual objects were at the Archeological Museum and the actual places situated in Knossos, now with copies of the original buildings, amphorae and frescos.

                                                Knossos

For the rest of our time we organized our own schedule, including going to beach, doing some shopping and still one trip to the nearby village Chritsa.

Actually I bought only a set of jewelry of olive tree. I also needed the simple dress which would be easy to take off and put on at the beach but my spouse wanted to buy a bit better one….

Celebrating the birthday of my spouse in my new dress

I found it quite easy to live there as Anukatariina. The wig was a problem on the other hand when it was really hot and when I went to swim. In both cases I used a silken scarf.

                                             Getting my bikini tan lines

There was a certain difference when we were welcomed to taverns as a man and a woman and as two ladies. In some cases flirt we got at first faded a bit after the situation became clear to the waiter.

When it's hot you must drink enough, this time a really chilly beer.

We were rather discrete while going out or coming in at the hotel. However in the last evening the older Sofia shouted loudly when we were passing the hotel restaurant and wanted to hug me very tight.

Our nighties pleated by the cleaning lady

                                      The last supper....I gained 3 kilos !!!

My spouse bought a new sun hat and wanted to have the older one, too. So I had to wear the new one on our trip back home. When our bus back to Herakleion airport came to fetch us I saw the tourist guide looking at us, then the passenger list and then the both twice again – When she opened the bus door she had finally figured out what was going on…

This trip was the first one I’ve used my new id card with my female picture. The officials didn’t pay any attention on it - I didn’t see any reaction.
